Rod bearing failure?

I had a bad rod bearing on #6 connector, so I replaced them all. The next day it happened again, same rod. What's causing it?

Hi,

When you replaced the bearing, did you confirm the one used was the correct size? If the crank was worn, you would have needed an oversized bearing.

I used a standard set because that's what was in it. There didn't appear to be anything wrong with the crankshaft on #6 and all the other bearings looked normal and were tight. I've never done this before, but I guess you learn from your mistakes. I'm taking the crankshaft to be checked today and hopefully I'll still be able to use it.

Hi,

Since the other bearing failed, there is a good chance there is excessive wear on that journal. To determine if there is excessive clearance, you need to use a product called plastigauge.

Plastigauge looks like a string. You place it over the rod bearing and then install and torque the bearing to the manufacturer's specification. Next, you remove the end cap and you will see that the plastigauge has been crushed. Based on how crushed it is determines if there is proper clearance or if it is excessive indicating excessive wear on either the bearing or journal.

I ended up taking the crankshaft to the machine shop and had it checked. Turns out it's shot, having an -80thousandths reading on #6 and normal -5 thousandths on the rest. Now I've ordered another crankshaft but am finding it impossible to find a rod to replace the #6 as suggested by my machine shop.

Will any other engine rods work on my 3.7 V6 or do I have to have this particular one to work? Running out of options and money.

Hi,

The rods aren't specific to any cylinder. As long as you get one for a 3.7L and the same model year, you should be fine.
