Revs to 5000rpm when started then settles at 2000 RPM till you press accelerator

Car starts revs to 5000rpm then settles to 2000 rpm then rises to 5000 when driving have checked all hoses and electrical feeds idle control valve etc could you shed some light on this problem It is a 2004 model 1.8 lt petrol engine

First thing I would do is get the computer (OB2) scanned. This will make it easier to help in the diagnosis. Most auto part stores will do this for free. When you get the codes, write them down and let me know what they are. There are many problems that could create this symptom and without speculating for hours let's try this out first and I'll be happy to help you out in finding the problem.

Had already done that changed all the code parts still running a bit high at 2000rpm Thanks anyway

If you use a Ford scan tool, you can look at the parameters of the engine to see which components are functioning correctly and which ones are out of range. Say like a mass air flow sensor, or a throttle position sensor. After you drive it, does it continue or only on start up?
