When I put it in reverse, I sometimes hear crunching noises. The sound is pretty distinct and I am sure it is coming from the gearbox, but it does not sound like grinding at all. It is more as if it just cannot go into the reverse gear. Other gears work fine, and the sound is not heard if I double-clutch.

Any noise like that is a concern, I would be getting the pan off and looking for any metal in the oil, you will probably be up for a transmission as any metal has gone through the transmission oil supply system and this can cause problems as well, but first check the pan for debris and if there is signs of metal, get to a transmission repairer for a quote on a re build or change over transmission.
