In most cases, if there are no leaks at the transmission (slave), the problem is the master cylinder. However, that is always a tough one to call.
As far as the slave cylinder is concerned, yes, the transmission needs to be removed to access it.
If you look below, the first five pics are directions for replacing the clutch master cylinder. The remaining pictures are for the slave cylinder. Note that the last pics are directions for removing the transmission.
The very last two pics below are the parts and labor. The labor for the slave includes removing the transmission. The labor for the master cylinder is only one hour.
