I replaced the O2 sensors, but cannot clear the error codes in the ECU. I tried 'clear codes' using a diagnostic tool and I tried disconnecting the battery and draining it. The codes remain in the ECU without starting the car up.

If you cannot clear the codes, then most likely that means that replacing the O2 sensors did not fix the problem. Error codes do not always mean a sensor is bad, it just refers to the circuit, so it could be a problem with the circuit wiring.

What are the actual codes you have? What tool are you using to clear them?
