I have a few detailed questions regarding how to with engine in the vehicle. Does the oil pan need to come off in order to remove and re-install the timing cover? Do the four water pump bolts go into the water jacket of the engine? Or do they just terminate into threaded bosses?

The oil pan does not need to be removed and the water pumps bolts go through to the water jacket. Here are the instructions to help if you need it. Check out the images (below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Thanks. Was good backup info confirming what I vaguely suspected. New problem (that others also seemed to encounter, but haven't told me of why or final resolve): all initial basic checks past failing shop diag as a code fault of MAF sensor (expensive wrong diag with no apologies from shop) lead me to check timing chain (stretch? Skipped Gear tooth?) And go old school. Seemed to indicate such. But, all checks and mic'ings performed to compare existing parts to new parts left me thinking the new T-set will also have slack and that's exactly what happened when I installed the new set! So now I'm really flummoxed! Poor quality of mfg. It's a Cloyes set and I understood they're reputable.

Yes, Cloyes parts are among the best. There will be some play, but it should be better than the old chain. Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone, that way I can tell for sure what's going on. You can upload it here with your response.
