will power steering fail if only the outermost belt fails?

That would depend on what engine you have. Nissan doesn't show a 2.2 in the Pathfinder. The ones using a V6 use the inner belt to power the alternator and A/C and the outer belt to power the power steering pump. If that belt failed then yes, you lose power steering.
