I have a 52 plate 1.6v megane sport, when starting the car I push the start button and the car starts immediatly, by the time I put the cat into gear and apply my foot to the accelerator it cuts out... this can happen several times and continues until I manage to pull off and get the revs up... any ideas

is the CEL/MIL (check engine light) showing on the dash display .. does the vehicle run good the rest of the time ? does it stall at light's etc. ?

The light was on for two - three days, but has gone off again, the problem still persists... as soon as I have managed to start the car & pull off it runs perfectly and does not cut out at all, it simply happens when first starting.
If I am able to pull straight off with high revs I can sometimes start first time and car drives fine.
do you have any thoughts on this?

check and clean the IAC (idle air control) valve

it is a very easy repair .. your local library should be able to supply a manual .. for diagrams etc.
