Engine Performance problem

I have joined this site for my friend who is having major probs with his Renault Megane. He has the push button start and is describing to me that since running his car low on petrol, he filled up at a garage and has experienced the car stalling and cutting out entirely. Seems to happen when using the clutch and slowing down. The battery is fairly new but he says so long as he keeps going, the engine does not fail! Is this the carburetta and fuel filter? Any advice would be welcome.
Sorry - had to guess year and mileage. Just know the problem he is experiencing. If more details are needed, I will ask!
