could the problem be one of the coil packs,the engine is only lumpy on tickover,drives ok,but there is a smell of petrol,due to one cylinder not fireing correctly. I will know which pot it is when it stops raining,I will test by process of elimination.please tell me if my suspicions are correct.

your suspicions are probably correct .. but replace all 4 coils together as they break down in sequence and you will have this problem again soon if you don't !
