1998 Renault Megane Speedometer only working intermitently

Hi, Can you help me fix my megane's speedometer as the speed gauge on occassion drops back to zero and hence clocks up no mileage. It sometimes comes back on but I was wondering if I can stop this from happening? By the way I am a complete novice so would appreicate if you could keep this in mind.

It sounds like the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is shorting out. Please let me know
