Engine is 1.8ltr petrol with cam belt changed at 72000 miles. Engine started squeaking (as if water pump starting to fail) about 100 miles ago, now turned into constant whirring/rumbling that escalates with engine speed, also some engine vibration when stationary with engine running and in drive. Noise fades or stops over 50 mph. Engine does not overheat, misfire, lose power when running.
What may be going wrong? Where do I start looking?

Dave H - you were on right track. It was the alternator bearing that had collapsed. Fixed by replacing unit.
