2001 Renault Laguna lost reverse gear

I recently stalled the car while reversing up hill its stopped with a thump the car has always shuddered while reversing uphill, all forward gears are working fine when you select reverse and let the clutch up the gear box just grinds as if it was not properly in gear any idea what could be wrong ! Les
