2002 Renault Espace radio tell tale

hi my problem is that the radio tell tale is reading OFF even though both the radio and cd work and can be controlled by the steering wheel controls the dash just says Off therefore i can't see what station or cd info is doing.i been told this is quite a common problem even though no one seems to be able to offer a solution .thanks for any help you can offer
