1998 Renault Espace gearbox wont change sometimes

the car drives fine but sometimes the service message comes on and the auto boxs drops to a low gear, first i think. then it all smells hot and oilly once it drops it wont change gear until it has been left to cool.
then it drives fine again until the next time

have the transmission checked/serviced sounds like it is overheating !!
