2001 Renault Clio Manual 60000 miles

An exhaust warning light has begun to flash all of a sudden and at the same time the car/exhaust now judders & spits every few seconds.
I get the feeling it might be serious!

this light can flash for numerous reason's .. I suspect you simply have a bad coil/spark plug (misfiring) causing excess exhaust emmissions .. have the vehicle plugged into a diagnostic computer .. most good repair centres do this ... this wil tell you/the tech where the fault actually lies !!
