1999 Renault Clio Two Wheel Drive Manual 97000+ miles

My car (1999 1.2L Renault Clio) is making a strange sound more and more frequently over the past few weeks. I had my car serviced a couple of days ago (found various unrelated problems such as - worn front 2 tires, worn front 2 brake pads, leaking back 2 brake wheel cylinders) and they could not find anything that may cause it, they instead told me to let it develop and maybe they could find the cause later down the line. It is a rubbing sort of sound and seems to be coming from the rear of the car, and as various friends have put it; "it does not sound good". I have found that it starts when I press and release the accelerator, but then gets worse to the point where it then makes the noise when I press and release the clutch also. I appreciate any advice. Thanks, Kristen.

Dave, would a problem with the wheel bearings not make a constant noise? Because it doesnt come on until after a few minutes of driving. Regards.
