how do i get the drum off to inspect the brake shoes

You either have to take out the 2 screws next to the wheel nut studs securing the drum ... or remove the large nut in the centre and then tap all around the drum with a hammer to loosen the shoes and pry off the drum ...(with handbrake off, of course) ....
