The best way is to erase it with a scanner once the cause has been solved. Given the age of the car, you can disconnect the negative battery cable for a minute, but be aware codes in some computers wont erase that way. I do not like to recommend that because people reading this while researching their car's problem might try it, and there are a lot of tricks built in to newer cars, especially GM products, that require trips to the dealer, often on a tow truck. European cars are famous for this too. Disconnecting the battery or running it dead should now be avoided whenever possible.
