Does removing the cylinder head require any special tools?

Yep, here is the list of special tools you will need:

Spark Plug Removal Tool -3122B-
Engine Bung Set -VAS6122-
Hose Clip Pliers -VAS6362-
Polydrive Bit Drive Socket -T10070-
Wrench - 21mm -T40263-
Socket - Xzn 12 -T40270-
Adapter -T40314-
24 mm Socket

There is a loosening and tightening sequence so be aware of that, and the head bolts are torque to yield so you will need new ones. here are the instructions on how to remove the install the cylinder head which I would go over completely before starting the job.
