What is the reliability of the 2016 Jag XF S Supercharged Engine?

Hello,

I am thinking about purchasing a 2016 Jag XF S Supercharged 3.0L V6. I recall some concerns with the reliability of the Jaguar brand as a whole. I was curious about this specific engine and car and whether it would be reliable if I stayed on top of the maintenance. The carfax for the vehicle shows the owners stayed on top of the recommended maintenance. Should I stay away from this vehicle?

Hello,

While in general European brands (BMW, Audi, Jag, Land Rover, etc, etc, ) have a bad rap for not being reliable, It is generally due to a few factors. One of them being lack of maintenance, and the other being a factor of being USA (made in China) parts. If the previous owner did the maintenance, and you do the maintenance, even that doesn't make the car bullet proof. What is the most important in these cars is to fix the things that are bad/broken when they break. They do not handle neglect very well, and yes, the repairs can be very expensive for some of these. I have several customers that have been driving these brands for years, and others that regret the choice. In short, check your budget for potential repairs on this car. I have seen these have timing issues and other miscellaneous engine troubles.

Thank you for your response! It really is helpful, especially on topics such as Jaguar and their reliability. Are there certain year models you recommend to stay away from? They are such a good price point when they are preowned, but at the same time, it makes me hesitant as well.

Hello,

To be honest, I would stay away from things that are supercharged or with a turbo. Unless you have an interest in fast cars or modifications, many people don't see the purpose of the added power of the car. These are high dollar expense items when they need maintenance or replacement. The supercharger being the most expensive compared to the turbocharger. But, it still boils down to your preference. Turbos and superchargers require their own maintenance as well. Whatever car you are looking at try to dig up as much service history as possible, at the same time you can search or ask us here for the maintenance intervals and we can provide that to you. Likewise if you get lucky the owner would have left the original owners manual in the car, providing you with the OEM maintenance schedule.

That makes sense. I have heard that with various cars that have turbos or superchargers, even with the Infiniti Q50s. I have heard of people replacing the turbo around 100k miles on forums. I do have a bit of an itch for a faster car. I have a 2010 Nissan Maxima (owned and paid off for 6 years roughly). However, it is very limited to improving the performance.

The 2016 Jaguar XF S would have more potential. The one I did a test drive didn't seem to shift all that gracefully though. I am not all that familiar with turbo engines, but compared to a BMW 340i (turbo engine) I test-drove, it was night and day on the shifting. To be honest, it was exactly an apples-to-apples comparison though, so I haven't given up on them quite yet. The reliability and maintenance cost is the real kicker.
