Car had a misfire, ran great prior to that (for its age). Took to a garage and they put in new set of spark plugs. The misfire was far worse and still not running correctly. Took car back to them. They said they missed that one of the spark plugs they installed was "defective", and they put another new spark plug in. Got the car back and it is still not right! Still feels like it wants to shut off, rough idle at stop lights and when idling and when I drive it, it feels like as if it is dragging something or that the emergency brake is on, low power, not running right, and make like a loud rubbing noise from the engine. I have had this car for 12 years now and I know it is not like it was before. Something is definitely wrong with it! The shop who worked on it are supposed to be very good, but they charge a big bundle. And they have not fixed it so far. Please advise me what to do.

Welcome to 2CarPros.

If they have not fixed it and you paid them, I would take it back again and ask why it wasn't fixed. Remind them you paid to have the misfire repaired and they haven't held up their end of the bargain.

If the check engine light is staying on, do me a favor. Take it to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan the computer for diagnostic trouble codes. Write down what they find and let me know. I will be able to direct you better once I have that information.

Let me know.

Joe

Alright I will do that Joe. They charged $262.00 to change the spark plugs, not even including the coil. And when I took it back, because that misfire was still happening, they claimed that it was a defective spark plug from the new set which they installed 2 days prior. The engine light is not on again, but it probably will be any time now. I have only driven it once since I got it back the second time. I may plug in one of those code readers. Will it tell me anything if there is no engine light on? I am actually puzzled why that light is not back on. Because the engine is running as if it is in 'limp mode' (now that I read about it on your site just now). I will let you know how it goes. I have no more money to spend on this, but I have to get the car fixed somehow. Thank you Joe. I will keep you informed. Thank you very much.

So, I have driven the car again today and it seems to be running much smoother this morning. My son plugged in one of those code readers before we left for our quick trip down the road and it showed 'no codes'. It did not act up today near like what it did yesterday. So maybe it takes some time for the spark plugs to be effective? I do not know. But it seemed like it was still running a little rough and shaky-ish at the red lights and for stops. I'm really worried that it may be a sensor or something causing a problem for which they did not check out. I just do not get it. Why would it still have the problem, only seems minimized, but still does the 'acting up' at times? So I cannot tell you any codes, the engine light is not illuminated, and I will keep a record of what it does or does not do. I looked for any vacuum leaks in hoses (none found so far), the oil is good, and it ran smoother today. So I will keep an eye on it and report back to you if I have any further questions. Thank you so very much. You guys are wonderful!

I just hope and pray that the engine does not come back on. And that the misfire does not happen really bad again. And that it does not go into what seemed to me to 'limp mode' again (like it did yesterday - that seems to describe very well how it acted yesterday). We'll see. For sure.

Welcome back:

Maybe the misfire caused the cylinder to load up with fuel. See if it comes back and let me know.
