Car runs quietly until reaching 45-50 plus sustained speed. Then there is a distinct muted rattling sound coming from the rear. Annoying and suspicious. Help!Just bought the car from CARMAX. Had it back twice and they can't seem to diagnose.

Hi,

Many things can rattle. Were things such as sway bar links and shocks / struts checked? Also, is it loud enough for you to record on your phone an upload for me to hear?

I have another question. Is it only related to speed or does it also seem related to engine RPM's? Do me a favor. Take a rubber mallet and tap on the exhaust system to see if you can reproduce the sound. Also, inspect the rear sway bar links and bushings? I attached a picture of the sway bar, the links and the bushings are highlighted. Check all of those things for play or damage.

Also, here is a list of common causes of rattling from the rear:

TRUNK
Trunk noises are often caused by a loose jack or loose items put into the trunk by the owner.
In addition look for:
Trunk lid bumpers out of adjustment
Trunk lid striker out of adjustment
The trunk lid torsion bars knocking together
A loose license plate or bracket

Last, let me know if the noise changes with speed. For example, does it sound like it speeds up as the tires do?

Let me know.
