Differential rebuild I think it's whining

Rear end I think it's whining. I changed gear oil. Now only whines between 35 and 55 mph. I used 75/145. Also, what type of gear oil goes in my manual transmission 2 wheel drive? And what would I need to do to fix the whine?

Good morning.

The transmission requires ATF. I posted the type and amount below for you.

As far as the rear end, the bearing are worn and must be replaced. Basically, you will be replacing the carrier and pinion bearings in the differential.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-a-differential-works

I attached diagrams of the bearings below. I also attached a YouTube video on the replacement.

Fluid Types
Manual Transmission Fluid .................... Mercon ATF

CAUTION: Using a transmission fluid that indicates a dual usage MERCON and MERCON V in a transmission application requiring MERCON, may cause internal transmission damage. The use of any fluid other than the recommended fluid may cause transmission damage. Some fluid labels may indicate dual usage such as MERCON and MERCON V. These dual-usage fluids are not to be used in transmissions that use only the MERCON type fluid. These dual-usage fluids may be used in transmissions that require MERCON V use.
Capacities
Manual Transmission

Capacity .................... 3.7 Quarts

Note: Approximate refill. Service refill capacity is determined by filling the transmission to the bottom of the filler hole with the vehicle on a level surface.

I have another question. I'm trying to find out rear end size. Code on door says axle 18. Ratio 7. I looked it up the best I could. Got all different sizes. Need to know so I can get the 3 bearings for the pinion gear to stop howling. Thanks

If you drop the rear cover, it will have the ratio on the back of the pinion.

No, you need 4 bearings and 4 races, not 3.

I attached 2 pictures of the rear differential cover. One is 8.8 and the other is 9.25. That is how you tell what differential.

One more thing. Mine does not have a fill plug. It has a sensor on top held in with one small bolt. Think it's an ABS sensor.

Thanks.

That is the first picture I attached. You have the 10 bolt rear, that is the small rear.

I attached a YouTube video which is on the bench from a Jag but they used the same rear as yours for replacing the bearings.

The fill plug is not on the cover, it is in the housing.

Yes, it is the ABS sensor at the top.

I could not find a fill plug anywhere. I figured you pull the sensor out and fill it there. It's a good size hole.

I saw the pic. There is no explanation for the numbers, lol. And still, what rear end do I have and will the 1991 be the same?

The part I circled is the fill plug in the picture.

You have an 8.8 differential in your truck. It is a 10 bolt rear.

The parts I attached are the correct parts for your truck.

No, it is not. The housing is different. The width is different, the pinion is different and the mountings are different.

It would be easier and cheaper to rebuild your differential.
