noticing a grinding sound from the rear passenger side

if you pull the handbrake, how high does it rise until it engages???? this clicking noise you hear could be a few different things.... most common is shoes out of adjustment.... when you hit the brakes, the drum will pull a shoe, and push the other.... when they are far out of adjustment, it can cause the shoes to "clap" and this maybe the noise you hear.... also, did u verify correct shoes were installed per side? one shoe is primary, other is secondary.... the shoe with a longer brake surface area, always goes to the back of the vehicle.... this is the primary shoe.. im sure you know what your doing, and already knew this, but i need to mention just in case.... anyways, check the shoe adjustment before we go nuts here.... you want a little bit of drag, but not much.... you replaced drums, so you should beable to slide the drum over the shoes (with a little resistance) and then spin the drum.... the drum should spin freely, but have an ever little bit of drag..... does this make sense?

Thx for the quick reply! I had a brake shop finish up and bleed the brakes for me...ran out of time. They put a new wheel cylinder one side and bled and adjusted the parking ebrake cable. It catches within 2 clicks when you pull up on it...so it's very close. You can spin the wheel freely though with the ebrake disengaged.

Will check the position of the primary / secondary shoe... I may have flubbed that. Also, on the tension clips that hold the shoes from the backing plate. If these were not replaced, could this cause the clicking? I read that one another utube video as it being a possibility.

these clips arent necessarily due for replacement... all they do is keep pressure on the shoes and pull them torwards the backing plate... i dont believe they can cause a clicking sound, as long as they are installed.... why did they only replace 1 wheel cylinder? i assume it was leaking, but if one side was bad, the other side isnt far behind, and should have been replaced as well.... (when you buy sneakers, do you buy the pair, or only 1?) sounds like the rear shoes were adjusted correctly, as if 1 side was way out, the e-brake would engage much higher.... my money is on warped drums.... i know they are new, but i see it all the time! im in the habit now if machining brand new drums, just so i know they are true.... check this next... if im right, you owe me a margarita! haha, just kidding....

When I removed the old parts, I removed the lower spring, then the 2 tension clips and kinda peeled the two shoes over the hub. In doing that, the rubber gasket got pushed out of its seal. Then putting it back in to make a good seal was near impossible. This is why the brake shop replaced it. That and the bleeder was seized (6 years old) (rookie mistake on my part).

The brake drums came from Canadian Tire. So, what I'm going to do is flip the passengers side one (where the noise is) for the drivers side one. If the noise follows, off to crappy tire for a new one.

well..after cleaning the side that was making the clicking sound and swapping the drums side <-> side, reassembling, clicking has stopped. was almost hoping it would go to drivers side....oh well..
