Radiator replacement

Removal

Note! Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

Remove the following items:
- Cover bumper front Refer to: Cover bumper front See: Front Bumper Cover / Fascia > Removal and Replacement Cover bumper front See: Front Bumper Cover / Fascia > Removal and Replacement
- engine cooling fan (FC) Refer to: Engine cooling fan (FC), B6324S4 See: Radiator Cooling Fan > Removal and Replacement > Engine Cooling Fan (FC)

Perform cooling system draining, charging and bleeding Refer to: Cooling system - draining, charging and bleeding, B6304T4, B6324S5, B6324S4 See: Cooling System > Procedures > Cooling System - Draining, Charging And Bleeding

Warning! Be prepared to collect escaping fluid.

Remove right headlight Refer to: Headlamps See: Headlamp > Removal and Replacement > Headlamps

Torque: Radiator to condenser, 5 Nm

Warning! Be prepared to collect escaping fluid.

999 5463 FIXTURE See: Vehicle > Electrical / Mechanical Repair > 999 5463 Fixture

Torque: M8, 24 Nm

Installation

To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Your second attachment that shows the wire harness being detached. this is the anti-tamper device that I need to replace not the radiator. I should only have to remove, I think, the plastic fan housing/shroud. There must be directions on replacing just the radiator anti-tamper device?

Radiator anti-tamper device? I am not sure what you are talking about. Here is a diagram of the cooling system. can you take a look to tell us which part you are talking about?

Here is the part to replace (attached). It clips along the top of the radiator and sits about six inches below the top of the radiator.

Got it, this car has two coolant temperature sensors this is one of them. Use a standard screwdriver to release the clips and it will come straight out. Make sure the the engine is cold coolant will leak out once the sensor is removed. I found a diagram for it finally (below). Check out the diagrams (below). Let us know what happens and please upload pictures or videos of the problem.

Great, you found it. How do I get to it? I need to remove the radiator shroud/cover to gain access to the sensor, I believe. I have no access right now.

If this is actually the stupid tamper switch that is the issue. What code(s) are you getting, U028600 Lost Communication with Radiator Anti-Tamper Switch ?

The sensor is there only to prevent someone from installing a non OEM radiator in the car.
It is glued into the radiator itself between the cooling fan support and the radiator. You need to remove the cooling fans and a few other parts to get to it.

However before you do that you may want to google Volvo TJ27910 as it covers this very issue and there are different repairs depending on which codes you actually have. The technical journal also has the instructions for replacing the part if it's needed.

The attached image are the codes you could have and what steps to take. Replacing the "sensor" only may not change anything as there is a software update as well.

To replace the part you need to remove the airbox then the battery and battery box, If it has a power steering pump you need to disconnect the line on top and move it out of the way, then you can release the retainers for the cooling fans, disconnect the wiring to them and move them back and lift them out. That exposes the tamper switch so you can remove it. It is glued onto the radiator fins. You pry it off, then glue the new one on. Then reverse the process.

Hi steve; yes, it is uo28600! So just an ECM upgrade?

A reflash with the updated software should do the trick as long as the other codes are not hiding.
