I purchased this car recently from a private seller, and the battery for the key remote needed to be changed. At the time of looking at the car (a few days ago) everything was in working order. Both my friend (who is an electrician) and my mechanic looked at the car and agreed that it was in good mechanical and electronic order at the time.

When I went to have a new battery fitted after taking delivery of the car this morning, the technician at the shop dropped the chip and subsequently lost it. He also put the new battery in upside down, which I realized after the auto electrician next door reopened the key and discovered the missing chip. Needless to say I am deeply regretting ever walking into that shop to have the battery changed.

They then had a locksmith replace the lost chip with a new one - now the car starts, but the central locking does not work and the remote will not turn the alarm on. The car radio is also now not picking up the pre-programmed channels where it was previously working perfectly.

I did not personally deal with the locksmith, however I know who he is and can contact him myself. It seems to me that the only possible reason for this problem is the chip either not being programmed for the central locking or being programmed incorrectly, as it was fine before the guy lost the original one. I understand (but could be mistaken) that when programming, it is also necessary to work with the electronics on the car itself. Is the programming for the central locking system (standard factory fitted system) different to that of the immobilizer? Is it possible that the locksmith changed something by accident that has thrown off the electronics?I have tried resetting the alarm in the manner that I saw on one of the other threads, but it did not help. The LED light on the remote comes on when I press the button but nothing happens.

I am unsure of whether to approach the technician who originally lost the chip (I am reluctant to do so as this is someone who does not even know which way to insert a battery in a remote), go to an auto electrician, or go to the locksmith who provided the replacement. I am concerned that this is going to become a very inconvenient and costly exercise and I don't know enough about these systems to approach it with confidence. Unfortunately I live in a relatively small town in South Africa and the make is not well known here so I desperately need the assistance of someone who is familiar with Proton electronics.

Unfortunately, because I had literally just taken delivery of the car and was en route to have the insurance inspection done when I stopped to change the battery, this problem is significant.

Thank you in advance - I hope someone can help!

We do not have those cars in US, but have it reprogrammed for security due to battery/chip issues then call manufacturer for code to put back in radio and reset it. You will need the VIN number for that.
