I have noticed a few times in the last week or so that my car judders as it changes gear mainly when I put my foot down on a main road.
Then yesterday I had to call RAC out as I returned to my car, turned on the engine, put it into reverse but it just wouldn’t move. It just revved almost as if I had the handbrake on.
The engine light was also on and the gear display was flashing which it doesn’t usually.
RAC man put it into neutral and tried to roll it which he couldn’t. He kept fiddling around with the gears and eventually got it working again.
He said the problem was reading as “can’t engage second gear” he had no idea why it had happened or if it would do it again. He said it was almost as if it had just got stuck.
I’m now scared to drive it in case it happens again when I stop at traffic lights for example.
Can’t get it into the garage until end of next week. Anyone have any ideas what it might be?

Hi,

This vehicle isn't offered in the US, but I will try to help.

Have you done the basics such as check the transmission fluid to see if it is clean and full? Also, if I understand, you couldn't get the vehicle into neutral. Make sure the linkage between the transmission and shifter hasn't come loose or is damaged.

Now, on many newer vehicles, the transmission is controlled by what is called a transmission range sensor. If this fails, the transmission doesn't know what gear it is in. So, that could also be an issue.

If it is possible, tell me the exact code he found when he scanned the computer. I will do some research to determine possible causes of that specific code.

Take care,
Joe

Hi Joe,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I don’t know the exact code, he just said it was coming up as unable to engage second gear.
Would I be damaging the car by continuing to drive it if it was one of those issues?
Many thanks.

I have to be honest, with today's vehicles anything is possible. If the range sensor is bad, it could send incorrect signals and cause the transmission to make unwanted shifts. If you contact the person, would he provide the code to you?
