Problem with backfiring in exhaust

Car will stall in gear, black soot in tail pipe, idle is high, rhythmatic popping in exhaust. Car is also hard to start.

scan for codes and check fuel pressure with a gauge. Auto parts rent it if you do not have one. Check for a vacuum leak, see link for fuel pressure.
