I first noticed that sometimes when I'm sitting at a light or when I get home and the car is idling it's a little loud, but not all the time. I also noticed today that I was having issues going uphill. Also, when I'm accelerating on a flat road, it sounds louder to me. What could be causing this? The only thing my son checked was the air filter which didn't look bad.

Hi,

If it sounds different and you notice a power loss, the first thing that comes to mind is a partially plugged catalytic converter. Have you noticed any odd odors from the exhaust? Do you notice any rattling from under the vehicle?

Take a look through this link and let me know if anything mirrors what you are experiencing:

If the engine sound is louder than normal and can be recorded, do that and upload it for me to hear.

Take care and let me know your thoughts.
