comes on erratically and goes away, what is the problem and what is the repair?

pre-safe comes and goes off erratically, car will not shift beyond 2nd speed and check engine light coms on. This situation will exist temporilly and then car will act normally.

Scan engine and trans for unresolved fault codes the check light is indicating a fault code is present.
