It is hard to know without knowing what the code is that goes with it. I would suggest just stopping by a parts store like PepBoys, Autozone, or a similar one and ask them to pull the codes. Get me the codes and we can figure out what the possible causes are and that will tell us the severity.

Unfortunately it does not. Where did that come from? With a check engine light you will get a code that is something like Pxxxx. A P followed by 4 numbers.

If the check engine light is flashing then you should not drive since you will melt the catalytic converter. Something like an evap code then you should be good. But as KASEKENNY1 pointed out, if you can post the trouble codes we will be able to guide you from there.
