I initially had a small power steering fluid leak. It was not a huge deal at the time. I would just check it and fill accordingly with plans to get the hose checked and fixed. Over time, the car began to hum loudly upon pressing the gas pedal, but would subside when the rpm's would go down. Upon turning, the hum would return loudly. The power steering fluid is becoming foamy, and now the steering wheel is stiff upon starting the vehicle. After turning the wheel a few times, it steers okay, but the hum is still there. I had believed the hum was coming from air in the pump. I took my vehicle to an auto shop, which told me upon inspection that I need all new hoses, a new power steering pump, a new rack and pinion quoted at over $1,800.00. They then told me that in order to get to the rack and pinion, they need to take something out, but the bolts to it are rusted, and if they break, it could drop the cradle and total the car. (?) Any advice on what I should do or if this process sounds accurate or not? Any and all is greatly appreciated.

Just fix the leak, then fill with new fluid then bleed the air out. I have no idea why they are basically wanting to replace the entire power steering system.

That is the route I was thinking of taking. As long as I keep the fluid at a good level, do you think that the car is safe to drive until I can get the leak resolved (a week?). And do you have an idea as to what the humming can be coming from? Not the pump?

Since turning the steering wheel makes the humming louder and you did say you noticed air bubbles in the pump, I would say the air in the pump is causing the noise.

Okay. Yes, the power steering fluid in the reservoir is pretty foamy. Looks almost like fiz when you pour a soda. As long as I can drive it safely for a few days, I can do your suggestion.

I do not see why not, just try to keep the fluid level up so you do not completely burn out the pump.
