Power steering pump

Power steering pulley came off. Pump is shot so now the belt is too big. I cannot afford a pump right now. Please tell me how to make this so I can drive it. I literally live in my car. At twenty three years old in a state where I know nobody. Possibly a shorter belt that will just go around and pass the power steering.

I do not see a belt listing for a belt without power steering. Also a shorter belt wont always work with the way the belt threads around the pulleys with one missing. Also running it without the power steering pump etc. I would have to say would not be good for your rack and pinon. It is designed to work with fluid and pressure. Not like a manual rack and pinon would work without all that. I get the bad situation, but I honestly do not see your idea really working out. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what happens.

I replaced my water pump and I'm having a problem getting the power steering pump aligned to install it.

Here are directions for removal and replacement. See if anything here helps. The attached pictures correlate with the directions. Also, let me know if you remove the PS pump pulley.

POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACEMENT
NOTE: The content of this article / image reflects the changes called out by TSB: 05-02-32-004.

Power Steering Pump Replacement
Removal Procedure
1. Remove the accessory drive belt.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
4. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering pump.

5. Disconnect the power steering return hose from the power steering pump.

6. Disconnect the harness connector (4) from the power steering pump (1).

7. Remove the power steering mounting bolts from the power steering pump.
8. Remove the power steering pump from the engine.
9. Remove the power steering pump pulley from the power steering pump.
10. Remove the power steering pump reservoir from the power steering pump.

Installation Procedure
1. Install the power steering pump reservoir to the power steering pump.
2. Install the power steering pump pulley to the power steering pump.

3. Position the power steering pump to the engine.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Install the power steering pump mounting bolts.
Tighten the bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. Lbs.).

5. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering pump.
6. Connect the power steering return hose to the power steering pump.

7. Install the harness connector (1) to the power steering pump (4).
8. Install the accessory drive belt.
9. Fill the power steering system with fluid.
10. Bleed the power steering system.
11. Operate the power steering system and inspect for power steering system leaks.

The light for tract control comes on then abs light then brake light and variable speed power steering light comes on I can feel it in the steering and brakes what would cause them all to light up could this be caused by power steering pump or bad belt or speed sensor will this effect my tranny

GM has two really huge problems that could be causing your symptoms. The first is the front wheel bearings. They develop a little play that is perfectly normal but they have wheel speed sensors built in that develop very wimpy signals to begin with, and that play allows the signals to get even weaker until the Anti-lock Brake Computer can't see them. That can happen to new wheel bearings in as little as 15,000 miles. The dealers' scrap metal bins are full of the old bearing assemblies. The loss of a signal will also cause the traction control light to turn on because that system is an addition to the anti-lock brake system. To determine if a wheel speed sensor / wheel bearing is the cause of those two lights turning on, have your mechanic read the diagnostic fault codes. Those will indicate the circuit or system that needs further diagnosis. The wheel speed data can also be read on the scanner during a test drive and you can watch if one of them drops out intermittently.

The other big problem for GM is their generators. Due to their poor design they develop huge voltage spikes that can damage the internal diodes and voltage regulator, and they can interfere with sensor signals for the other computers. One failed diode of the six will result in a loss of exactly two thirds of the generator's output current capacity. 30 amps from the common 90 amp generator is not enough to run the car's electrical system under all conditions, and the battery will have to make up the difference until it runs down. "Ripple" voltage will also be very high. With this condition system voltage can drop low enough to confuse the many computers which are very intolerant of low voltage. They may shut down or they might do weird things. Either way they are likely to turn on warning lights. To identify this the charging system must be professionally load-tested to see if the generator can deliver its design current.

If the generator has failed, replace the battery at the same time to reduce the high number of repeat failures, unless it is less than about two years old. As the battery ages it loses its ability to dampen and absorb those voltage spikes.

180.000 it would'nt let me type that above how to replace power steering pump and hoses.
From the top of the car or the bottom. And what tool will I need to pull the pulley

Pulley comes off together with the pump. The hardest part of the job is getting the hoses off the rack at the bottom. I lower the cradle to acess the hoses.

You will need a puller for the pulley change when they are out. You can rent the puller at the parts store

I have a 01 grand prix GT 3800, the power steering pump has been replaced four times in the last 3 years. It's almost like they're eating themselves. What's going to fix it so I can stop replacing it?

We couldn't find any kind of leaks leading to the power steering pump, we replaced the serpentine belt, and one of the last times we had to replace it, it was almost like the power steering fluid was being sprayed. Only solution we've come up with is to keep it full of fluid (about a bottle or two a day)

Fluid id being sprayed where? Do you mean it's bubbling out the filler cap. That would mean the system is getting aerated and you will have to find out where the air is coming from.

Hearing a whinning sound when I turn my steering wheel left or right doesn't matter. I know the pulley on it is bad since it has a decent amout of play in it. Its not losing any fluid either. Just trying to figure out if I need a new pump or what.

Check fluid level then turn to lock and hold 30 seconds do this both ways then check fluid level if noise is still there we need to replace the pump. Here is a guide to help you step by step with instructions in the diagrams below to show you how on your car.

I tried lubing it up with power steering fluid. Ive also tried shiming in it. It wont thread in all the way and it seems the line wont push in all the way
