Power problems

From the time I drove my vehicle from Mombasa, I noticed weak power when climbing hills and the reverse gear becoming very weak. i am now being told to change the gear box by my local mechanic. Please advise me what to do.

Check the oil condition and level, if it is dark and smells burnt there will be a problem internally causing the transmission to slip under load. if this is the case the transmission is due for overhaul or replacement.
