Welcome to 2CarPros.

The first thing I suggest is to scan the computer for diagnostic trouble codes. Here is a quick video that shows how it is done:

I realize most people don't own a scanner, but often times a part store will lend or rent one to you or even do it for you.

Now, based on your description, my first suspect is that you have a bad fuel pressure regulator which is allowing too much pressure to the injectors and flooding the engine. On a fuel injected car, when you hold the throttle to the floor, it shuts down the injectors. If that is what it was taking to start, I have a feeling that like I said, a bad regulator, or you have leaking fuel injectors which are flooding the engine with gas.

What I would suggest is this. First, check fuel pressure and confirm that it is within the manufacturer's specs. Here is a link that shows in general how it is done:

Here are the directions specific to your vehicle for attaching a fuel pressure gauge. Most part stores will lend you a gauge with hopes of selling parts. Pic 1 correlates with the directions.

FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE INSTALLATION AND REMOVAL
FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE INSTALLATION AND REMOVAL

TOOLS REQUIRED
J 34730-1A Fuel Pressure Gage
J 34730-262 Fuel Pressure Gage Fitting

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

CAUTION: Refer to Gasoline/Gasoline Vapors Caution and Fuel Gage Leak Caution in Service Precautions.

NOTE: Refer to Fuel and Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Hose/Pipe Connection Cleaning Notice in Service Precautions.

IMPORTANT: Position the fuel pressure gauge fitting to avoid contact with the belt.

pic 1

1. Install the J 34730-1 A with the J 34730-262 to the fuel pressure service connection, located on the fuel rail.
2. Turn ON the ignition.

CAUTION: Refer to Fuel Storage Caution Service Precautions.

3. Place the bleed hose of the fuel pressure gauge into an approved gasoline container.
4. Open the bleed valve on the fuel pressure gauge in order to bleed the air from the fuel pressure gauge.
5. Command the fuel pump ON with a scan tool until all of the air is bled out of the gauge.
6. Close the bleed valve on the fuel pressure gauge.
7. Command the fuel pump ON with a scan tool.
8. Inspect for fuel leaks.

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

pic 1

1. Place the fuel pressure gauge bleed hose into an approved container and open the bleed valve to bleed fuel system pressure.
2. Place a shop towel under the fuel pressure gauge adapter fitting to catch any remaining fuel spillage.
3. Remove the J 34730-1A from the adapter fitting.
4. Remove the J 34730-262.
5. Drain any fuel remaining in the fuel pressure gauge into an approved container.
6. Install the cap on the fuel pressure connection.

Here are the pressure specifications specific to your vehicle.

Note: There is a vacuum line attached to the regulator. Remove the hose and inspect if for evidence of fuel getting into it. In pic 2, I circled where the hose attaches and where it should be checked.

Pressure

Pressure 52-59 psi

If the pressure is too high, replace the fuel pressure regulator. Here are the directions specific to your vehicle for replacement of the regulator. Pic 3 correlates with the directions.

PROCEDURES
REMOVAL PROCEDURE

Pic 3

1. Relieve fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure.
2. Disconnect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
3. Remove the fuel pressure regulator retaining screw.
4. Using a shop towel to catch any spilled fuel, lift and twist the fuel pressure regulator in order to remove the fuel pressure regulator from the fuel rail.
5. Remove the retainer and spacer bracket from rail and discard.
6. Remove the fuel pressure regulator from the engine fuel return pipe.
7. Remove the fuel pressure regulator inlet O-ring and the fuel return pipe O-ring and discard.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

NOTE:
Do not use compressed air in order to test or clean a fuel pressure regulator as damage to the fuel pressure regulator may result.
Clean the fuel pressure regulator filter screen with gasoline if necessary.
Do not immerse the fuel pressure regulator in a solvent bath in order to prevent damage to the fuel pressure regulator.

pic 3

1. Inspect the filter screen for contamination. If contaminated, replace the fuel pressure regulator.
2. Lubricate new pressure regulator inlet O-ring with clean engine oil and install on regulator inlet.
3. Lubricate the new fuel return pipe O-ring with clean engine oil.
4. Install the fuel return pipe O-ring.

CAUTION: Connect the fuel return line before tightening the regulator attaching screw in order to prevent the regulator from rotating. Rotation of the regulator could damage the retainer and spacer bracket and lead to a fuel leak at the regulator inlet.

5. Connect the fuel return pipe to regulator.
6. Install the new retainer and spacer bracket into slot on fuel rail.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

7. Install the pressure regulator to fuel rail.

Tighten
Tighten the engine fuel return pipe nut to 17 N.m (13 lb ft).

8. Connect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
9. Install the pressure regulator attaching screw.

Tighten
Tighten the pressure regulator attaching screw to 8.5 N.m (75 lb in).

10. Verify that the retainer and spacer bracket is engaged in slots in fuel rail. Grasp and pull on the regulator to ensure that the regulator is properly seated.
11. Connect the negative battery cable.
12. Inspect the fuel system for leaks by performing the following steps:
12.1.Turn ON the ignition switch for 2 seconds.
12.2.Turn OFF the ignition switch for 10 seconds.
12.3.Turn ON the ignition switch.
12.4.Inspect for fuel leaks.
