The problems began in November l, 2023. The car had reverse only. Bushing on transmission linkage replaced.

Within a month, the car would quit without warning. Usually it would restart, but not always. It always restarted after several hours rest though. No code. Fuel pump replaced in April.

Drove without incidents for 2 months. In June, 2024, it would not start for several hours, then started normally. Code P0171. Fuel pressure sensor replaced.

Today, August 7th, behaved like the battery was discharged. I charged battery, but it was not discharged enough to not start the car.
I could not get the shift lever out of park. After numerous tries with key, it finally moved.
The car started fine in park. However, when moving the shift lever to reverse, the car quit as though the ignition switch was turned off, including no lights on the instrument panel.
I started the car in neutral. The car moved forward fine but shut down again as soon as the shift lever was moved to reverse.
There was no indication of a short as no fuses blew.
I don't know of any link between the transmission position sensor and electrical power completely shutting off

This can be the ignition switch or the gear range sensor shorting out, but I would check the battery cables to make sure there are clean a tight on the battery. If so, you can test through the ignition switch to confirm no power to the wiring that is to be power by it. Here is a guide to help and the ignition switch wiring diagrams so you can see how it works.

I have marked which wires should have power when the ignition switch is on. Check out the images (below). Please upload pictures or videos in your response of any problems so we can see what to help you with.

Ken, thank you for your reply and diagrams. I ordered both parts mentioned yesterday. I also have the complete wiring manual for this car, but it gets difficult to visualize the components. As soon as the weather clears up, I'll test the wires to the position sensor. This car has had issues with wires corroding inside the covering in the past.

Yep, that can be a problem, I would look inside the electrical connectors as well. Please let me know.

Hello Ken,
I installed a new ignition switch a few days ago. Couldn't get the car out of park. No electric to instruments or to start car.

The power to the switch comes directly from the battery junction box via 30A fuse.
It branches into two wires before the ignition switch. Looks like the switch actually has two internal switches. (I have the wiring manual.

I installed the neutral safety switch yesterday Nothing changed. I'll loosen and check the linkage tomorrow.
I discovered the release to get the shifter out of park.
Turning the key on and waiting for 10 or 15 seconds, I would sometimes have power to the instrument panel. The car would then start.
Still shuts everything off when the shifter is moved to reverse. Then the instrument panel lights would either get extremely dim or go out altogether.
Playing with the turn signal lever seemed to affect power to the instrument panel.

I checked the power to the ignition switch. It was good on both wires.

Some of the behavior is like a poor ground or a short, but it doesn't explain the shutdown no electric in reverse.
I don't see the connection between the reverse and the ignition switch.

I plan to check the transmission linkage. The arm at the transmission, with the plastic grommet, was replaced last November (11/23).
I will double check fuses for the transmission.
The reverse lights are linked in some way. I plan to check for a short.

My problem isn't unique, though I have found no common denominator for a solution.

You might be right with the ground connection; I would make sure the ground to engine and ground to frame/chassis is good. Also, could it be the battery is having issues, can I ask how old the battery is? You might want to have it load checked at the auto parts store.

The Digital range sensor on the transmission does report to the PCM so if that is having an issue it can cause this problem, I would disconnect it after the engine is running to see if it stalls if you can, here is the location. Check out the images (below). Let us know how it goes.

Hello Ken,
My latest reply, late yesterday, never posted.

The ignition switch supplies power to the central junction box and several fuses. One fuse, F4, supplies power to the safety switch, which directs it to the backup lights when in reverse.
[Battery cables, power and connections are all good.]

I removed the F4 fuse. The engine now starts and shifts into reverse.
There is some hesitation on startup, like the fuel pressure is not holding from one day till the next. I'll address that later.

My problem is far from solved but redirected to a wiring issue.
The wiring (just 2), for the backup lights, branches off just left of the glove box. Should be easy to check that part.

The turn signal, left or right, will now shut the car down instantly.

I cannot find any link between the turn signal switch and the ignition switch. I still need to review more diagrams. They seem to be separate. This could point toward a problem inside the central junction box. [Mice?]

I don't mind investing in a new turn signal switch as the auto return hasn't worked over the past 9 years. A new switch will help narrow the search for the cause.

Enjoy your week.
Bill

Hi Bill,

Yes, mice play havoc on the wiring, can you see damage? Please use a flashlight and looks under the dash the best you can. We should stay on the ignition switch problem on this thread and start a new thread for the turn signal problem.

"Shuts everything off when the shifter is moved to reverse." So, did we check the battery and cable connections, also the ground to the engine block and chassis? Let's do a CAN scan to see if any codes are stored. You can get a CAN scanner (Controller Area Network) which will work on most cars from Amazon.

Here is a video to show you how:

Please go over this guide and get back to us.

Battery and grounds are all solid. Sure are a lot of them. There were no new codes. Still have one for the catalytic converter(s). It's been there since 2016.
The problem with the ignition switch and now the turn signal are both linked by fuse F8 and the lighting control module.

Can you please upload a video of the problem so I can see? You can upload it here with your response. We need to hear the noise so we know which direction to go to help you fix the car. It takes time to upload so please be patient.

Hi Ken, the only noise was that of the engine shutting off. The car would lose all power at the moment it was shifted into reverse.
I'm in the process of accessing the wiring from the junction box. I'll touch base when I have more to report.
