Possible A/C compressor trouble

My A/C started blowing warm air about a week ago so I stopped using it until I could get it checked. But now the car is making a clanking noise and I smell steam. Now could this be that my compressor needs to be replaced or is there a simpler cheaper solution?

No, it does sounds like the compressor is out. If you leave the HVAC system off does the noise and smell stop? If so the compressor is bad. Here is a guide to help you see what you are in for when doing the job:
