2006 Pontiac Vibe engine stops or will not accelerate

while driving the car will suddenly stop accelerating . the engine will run but only get to about 25 miles an hour. it will also die at times and you have to wait 5 minutes to restart. the check engine light is on now . this happened once before but the check engine light went out and it ran fine for about 1 week

Have the computer scanned for OBD2 code/s this is your starting point finding out what's wrong. You have a problem within the engine management system.
