2003 Pontiac Vibe Timing belt broke

mechanic Who I don't know says the timeing belt broke and now the engine in no good. Will this destroy the engine? Please help

It has a timing chain, not a belt, I would get a second opinion. While they (chains) can break, it is RARE.
