2003 Pontiac Vibe Rear Seal

2003 Pontiac Vibe 6 cyl Automatic 132000 miles

Recently I took my vehicle to the Pontiac Dealer for Service and they advised that I have a rear seal going out. All told the repair and labor will cost me close to 400.00. What is a rear seal and how long can I delay this repair? What happens when the rear seal shoots craps? Can I die as a result of an accident on the way to work?

Is this an AWD model? Pontiac did not make a 6cyl. Vibe in '03. It had two different 4 cyl engines.
