transmission problem

1994 pontiac transport se 120.000 miles The van will not go into gear unless the van is warmed up for at least 25 minutes. we were going to change the fluid but this guy who repairs our van said we could change the fluid, but it would either do the same thing, fix it, or blow the tranny? what is wrong with the van please help?

What does the transmission fluid look like? does it have a brownish color. check and see if it smells burnt. changing the transmission fluid is a good idea as well as changing the filter. had a subaru that would do about the same problem and after flushing the fluid and changing the filter it stopped. it is not a guarantee to work if there is other internal problems with the transmission.
