Same problem exists for the owner of one of them, with his 1996 Chevy Pickup.
I had taken the Van to Advanced Auto, and 1 location the scanner will read the codes, and in another location it will not. I finally got a look at the scanner that will read the codes, and it is for type 1 and 2 OBD. Model 1910 I think. Just happened to be sitting on the sales counter. I was told you cannot get this scanner anymore, and even they do not sell it. They sell model 1930 only, and only for OBD2 vehicles from 1997-current.
Where can I find an inexpensive scanner that will work with this, where most fail to power on at all?
Did GM do something odd with the 1997 series, or is there some type of adaptor that you need? Another salesman argued that I was simply not pressing the right button or needed to consult the manual.
I cannot seem to find any adaptor that will make either one of them work, but clearly the vehicles are not supplying power to either of the scanners.
They plug in just fine however.
I want to reset the codes, and Advanced Auto and most places won't because it is illegal to do this, since you can do this to allow the vehicle to bypass when obtaining an inspection.
I am trying to figure out if the O2 sensors are truly faulty since the van runs fine, despite having these codes for the O2 sensors being bad. I don't want to have to replace them at cost of $120.00 each unless I am sure they are bad. I read the #2 sensor after the convertor, and it is getting power, and has about.5 volts and.63 volts on the other leads when the vehicle is running. I cannot easily get to the #1 sensor located upstream so I cannot say what or if it is bad. Van gets about 23 mpg highway, and with 190,000 miles on it, would seem about right for it's age. Again it runs well so I hesitate to replace them, not knowing if it is just needing a reset.
Can you reccomend a scanner that will work?
Just cannot get a working diagnostic from either of 2 models of more recent OBD2 pocket scanners.
Advanced auto readout/printout did indicate that in the past it had been reset also. The vehicle I was told before I bought it has had the transmission rebuilt so I am wondering if at the time that was done, they may have disconnected the sensors to cause the codes to appear.
It has the 3400 engine, and is the SE extended model. I tried the battery disconnect routine, that makes it go away for a few days but then soon after the service engine light is back.
