Clean Battery Acid Spill?

Hi,

A car battery (same car) accidently spilled its acid onto my trunk carpet of my 2002 Trans Am when I was transporting it. I have tried the Autozone cleaners, but have had no luck. It turns towels to dust when left to try to absorb it. It leaves its smell/texture on items/hands that come into contact with it. What do I do?
Is it cleanable?
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Franchise

Common household baking soda should neutralize the acid. Some auto parts stores have a spray battery cleaner also that does the same thing. Neutralizing the spill is probably the best you'll be able to do as if there is a stain, which there most likely is, the only way to correct it would be a dye such as coloring dye for clothing.
