The display is visible only when light is shining directly on it, so I know it's working. Why has it become so dim and how do I fix it?

The rest of the instrument panel displays fine, it's just the clock/radio that is freaking out. My brother told me that the same thing happened on his Grand Am and a short time later the volume controls started to behave erratically as well, forcing him to replace the stereo. Hoping there might be another fix...
