1998 Pontiac Transport service engine light is on

I want to buy this vehicle, but the service engine is on. When I test drove it, it did not seem to affect the engine. The seller says a camshaft sensor is out??????
What else could it be? Major engine trouble?? The van is a great deal, except this light
