2004 Pontiac Sunfire knocking under dashboard

I have knocking under my dashboard that starts when the car starts. Sometimes after I drive the car I can smell oil. The kockin is still present even if the air conditioning or heater are off.

Could it be more of a ticking? Are you sure it is from under the dash and not the engine?

Did you ever find out what was wrong with your car cuz my 05 sunfire is doing the same thing. Ive been smelling oil and then just today it started a knocking sound in the passenger side of the dashboard.
