2004 Pontiac Sunfire Check Engine Light is on

2004 Pontiac Sunfire Automatic

The check engine was on lthree weeks ago. When I drave it to a repair place, a mechanic got a code P0420 and cleared the code for me. But last Wednesday the light was on again. I used OBD2 and got same code: P0420 and P0420 pd. The car seems ok when I drive it.
Before doing some replacement, I would like to know what really cause the engine light on. Please help me to fix my problem.
