2003 Pontiac Sunfire squeaking when driving

My car is squeaking badly when driving, it squeaks when turning, driving straight. I took it to canadian tire and they said it was brakes. I thought it sounded like a bearing, they could be just trying to screw me out of 600 for new brakes

Im not sure if the brakes would squeak like they are when the brakes are not applied, how could i check for myself if it is the brakes?
