2002 Pontiac Sunfire Four Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a pontiac sunfire 2002. The thermostat on the car goes gradually up until it reaches the red part then shoots down and does this until the car shuts off...eventually. I went into auto zone to get a diagnostic. They informed me it was the coolant temperature sensor. I just got that replaced and am facing the same problem. There is no heat, the trac light is on, and the check gauges light is on. There is gas in it, and anti-freeze. I dont know wat else it could be. Ive heard possibly the fuel pump (which I got a new one maybe a year ago), or spark plugs. Please Help. Thanks!

try having your coolant system drained and flushed, very important to flush it periodically (50,000 kms or so) to keep the slime from building in the rad and heater core

next, check your fan for correct on and off temp settings, if on at 189 degrees, this is good, also check your water pump and pressure test the system,
